MY life has raced along ever since I put a successful moto-cross career behind me and ventured into the world of speedway joining the Buxton Hitmen and my local club, Workington Comets, in 2009. I was 21 and knew I had time to make up on the boys I was racing against, as most of them had been doing speedway for years. It was a whirlwind existence but I really started to prove myself when I won the National League Riders’ championship later that same year.
I had a handful of meetings at Peterborough in 2010 but my first big move came in 2011 when I began a long spell at Edinburgh, which lasted until 2015. I developed into their No 1 rider with the high spot of winning the Premier League Riders’ championship in 2012. I really felt I was reaching a higher level when I looked at the strong talent I had beaten. There was more joy at Edinburgh in 2013 when I won the Scottish Open and, two years later, we took the League championship.
I had made my first move into the top division when I signed for Belle Vue in 2011, where I've remained since. That brought a new set of challenges against international opposition and I proved myself at this level by becoming the British Champion in 2017, a great highlight of my career so far. I went on to be captain for team GB in the World Cup in 2017, a huge honour and in 2018 was a part of the three man team that brought back silver for GB in the Speedway of Nations.
My first taste of Grand Prix action came in 2014 and again in 2015 where I was wild carded into the British GP at Cardiff. In 2017 I battled through the Grand Prix qualifying rounds to become a full Grand Prix racer last season for the first time, the highlight being Cardiff where i got 3 race wins, unfortunately plus one crash leaving me 7th overall.
Missing out the GP 2019 series by 1 point in the GP qualifiers I now have an eye on next season’s GP, #2020vision.
So, it’s all go-go-go and I want to thank all those people who have backed me over the busy years.
See you track side, Craig.
